Installing Simulia 2017 on Windows 10 Tutorial Abaqus Tosca Isight fe-safe

This is the easiest install yet! The only real difficulty is finding and running the appropriate executables in the correct order. Read on for a step by step tutorial and some suggestions along the way.

Cleanup

If you have existing versions of Simulia products you can uninstall them now to free up room or keep them for posterity. You will need to uninstall the DSLS license server and update to  the newest version though which will not affect legacy Simulia products. I personally use CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download to uninstall and then clean my registry. A clean computer is a fast computer.

Next unzip all the downloaded files with your favorite zipping tool. My favorite is 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org/ followed closely by PeaZip http://www.peazip.org/

I usually unzip files with 7-Zip and create zip files with PeaZip.

Located at …AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extended.AllOS/1 is the 36 page installation guide SimuliaInstallationGuide.pdf, feel free to read the manual and we will come back to setup.exe in a little bit.

Installing DSLS

First uninstall any existing DSLS servers so we can install the new ones with either ccleaner or by going to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features in Windows. This does not kill your existing licenses.

Located at …AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extended.AllOS/1/DS_License_Server/AllOS/1/SetupDSLSmsi.exe (running as admin is a good idea)

On your license server choose ‘Install License Server and Administration Tool’. On your other computers you can choose ‘Install only Administration Tool’ if you would like.

Don’t click ‘Install Server from scratch. WARNING: All license keys will be deleted.’ unless you want to enroll license keys again.

Installing fe-safe

You need to browse to: …AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS\3\SIMULIA_fe-safe and extract SIM_fe-safe.AllOS.1-1.tar with 7-Zip

Browse to …AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS\3\SIMULIA_fe-safe\SIM_fe-safe.AllOS\1\windows where Installation_Licensing_Guide.pdf readme.txt are located here after some light reading right click on setup.exe and run as admin.

Just go with the defaults.

Installing Abaqus, Isight and Tosca

Browse to …AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS\1 pretend to read SimuliaInstallationGuide.pdf then right click on setup.exe and run as admin. Go with the defaults except where noted. Please note that FLEXnet License Server is not highlighted because it is not needed and is legacy for those without the DSLS.

You can also skip Tosca Fluid unless you have Star CCM+ or Fluent

My virus scanner gave a warning which I ignored. By the way, I have since ditched AVG for Windows Defender instead and no warnings were raised.

This warning popped up about issues with some programs. Ctrl+Shift+Esc and click on these processes and hit Delete. Press Retry.

Pointing to the license server is one of the few cases were the defaults don’t work. Make sure to expand the window because only the first radio button is visible. Click DSLS and then for License Server 1 type ‘localhost:4085’ if the license server is the computer you are installing on otherwise replace ‘localhost’ with the name of that computer.

I rarely change default locations but I do make an exception for the scratch directory which I changed from C:\temp to my second larger HD at D:\temp.

Windows firewall complained a couple of times which I clicked Allow access.

Assuming that you aren’t installing Tosca Fluid unselect it.

Select any solvers that you have.

For some reason Tosca with ANSA wasn’t on the previous list so just leave the location blank here.

No need for Launching the TomEE Configuration Utility unless you plan on remote solving.

All DONE!

All those pretty splash screens with so little work. Kudos to whoever created this packaged setup.exe which automatically runs through the different installs for Abaqus, Isight and Tosca. Not sure why fe-safe wasn’t there as well. Leaves room for improvement for next year.

I hope this helps. Now it’s time to take it for a spin!
